Are Cats Psychic?
Opinon is divided on this issue; most cat lovers claim that their cat has abilities beyond the norm. Extra-sensory abilities which could be classified as psychic powers or a sixth sense. There is also the phenomenon of psi-trailing; the ability to travel unaided, to reach a former home many miles away.
Theories put forward are that cats are sensitive to the Earths
magnetic field and that these pathways enable them to home-in
on a particular place or person. The very nature of cat; its air of
indefinable mystery often giving the impression that it sees
things others do not, has throughout history, encouraged mankind to
believe in its mystical powers. Only cat itself knows the truth.

Today we still attribute psychism to our feline friends. During my ten years as Editor of Cat World magazine, an amazing amount of correspondence on the subject of psychic cats found its way onto the pages. This made compelling reading and even today, when I meet up with cat people, the conversation invariably turns to the strange powers of our cats.

Early warning system...
DURING World War 2, Stripey our tabby cat would become very agitated then hide away about an hour before the Air Raid alarm went off, warning us of an impending German air raid. We lived just outside Liverpool at the time so air raids could be expected on a fairly regular basis, but when Stripey began to get worried we always knew it was time to go down to our shelter at the bottom of the garden.

MY DAD had a pet cat. They thought the world of each other and my abiding memories of Dad are of him sitting with Blackie either perched on his shoulder or asleep on his lap. When Dad went out for a walk, Blackie could be seen trotting behind him - they were inseparable and the cat would have nothing to do with anyone else.
However, early one morning, Blackie made a terrible fuss trying to get into my room. I went to see what was the matter and Blackie led me straight to Dads room. I found Dad sleeping peacefully; he woke later, ate his breakfast and settled down in his chair. The day went by as normal and eventually we all went off to bed. Next morning I discovered that Dad had passed away in the night. Blackie had disappeared and we never saw him again.

The feline ghost
WE LOST our cat Sandra to the busy main road outside our house. We were distraught but in the fullness of time bought a nine month old Persian Longhair - so different from our red tabby Sandra whod been a sparky little thing and always up to mischief. By comparison, Petal our Persian was quiet as a mouse and as good as gold.
She had been with us for about a week when she began to act totally out of character, shed hiss and spit every time she went into the kitchen; her fear - or aggression, we couldnt tell which - was directed at the area beneath the kitchen table.
No way would she go near that spot, shed back away with her hackles rising and her eyes staring out of her head.
This particular place was where Sandras basket had been; her own private hidey-hole. Was she still with us? And was she warning Petal to keep off her territory? Petal took it all very much to heart and is now happily rehomed with my sister.

... My cat Sophie took an instant dislike to the bathroom in our
new house. She avoids it at all costs. We asked the estate agent if
anything bad had happened in that room; he hesitated and then told us that
the previous occupant had drowned in the bath. ![]()

Teddy, my Mums tabby cat knows when the phone is going to ring. He just sits there looking at it and in a minute or so it always rings.

A black cat recently took to following me whenever I left the
house. I dont know whose it was or why it attached itself to me. But
last Wednesday, I believe that this cat saved my life. Let me explain: I
was walking down our road to the local library when the cat head-butted my
leg really hard. The blow knocked me into a shop doorway. I was stunned
with shock - then annoyed, until an out-of-control car zoomed by - exactly
where I had previously been walking. Strangely, I havent seen my
lucky black cat since that day. ![]()
